How Do You Build An Electric Generator? – Wind Energy Science And Technology

February 6th, 2010 by Gary Ashby

Economic strife often brings out the creativity in people. One way that people are starting to save is by seeking a, “How do you build an electric generator at home” guide. As with any information downloaded from the Internet or found through other sources, caution should be taken as many projects do not work as described, so guidelines from a reliable source should be sought.

First, one must understand that generators are designed to convert heat or kinetic energy into a form that can run through wires. This product is called electricity which flows into the home. With the turning internal workings of the machine, a magnetic field is created in a loop of wires that subsequently generates power.

Since electricity degrades over time, it’s important that a constant flow be kept up in order for things requiring electricity to run. When using a generator, this can be accomplished with a battery. However, one needs to be cautious in that some Internet sites claim that a 12-volt battery will be sufficient. These claims need to be viewed with caution since this size battery runs very few things.

Specialization in the field is not required when building a home generator. Many of the required parts can be found in and around the house or are very inexpensive to purchase. Many have seen pictures of those riding a stationary bicycle to run a washer, the sight of tall turbine windmills in the desert, or even water-powered devices along riverbanks. All of these can be built at home with little effort as can smaller solar-powered units.

The amount of power generated is directly dependent upon the number of loops around the central wheel as well as the speed with which the wheel turns. Additionally, the quality of the connections is also important and, if connected improperly, can cause a short circuit.

Many do-it-yourself guides are currently on the Internet and elsewhere by simply searching, “How do you build an electric generator” Guide. Although they can be somewhat difficult to understand initially, with a little patience and some trial and error anyone can be saving much on monthly energy bills in a short amount of time.
